Auto insurance for some consumers can be costly, not to mention confusing. Insurance provides protection to consumers by taking on or assuming certain risks and a promise to pay for certain losses. My guide will help you to understand and make an informed decision, when it comes to purchasing insurance. Being a safe and responsible driver, will lower the cost of your insurance rate, now and in the future.

On average, an insurance premium on one vehicle runs about $820 for six months for a full coverage, based on a study conducted in 2003 by the NAIC, National Association of Insurance Commissioners. But some consumers found this figure to be inaccurate, base on their own experiences. However, in Kansas, we find the typical 6 months premium is half of that, for a preferred driver. There are numerous factors, which determine the price you will pay for auto insurance. 1. Your characteristics (geographic location, usage of the vehicle, age, gender, marital status, and the make and model of the vehicle) and 2. And also, the likelihood you will file a claim or the "risk" you present (vehicles with less safety features and powerful engines carry a greater risks than less sporty vehicles, your credit history predicts the likelihood of future loss, the lapse or cancellation of insurance for non-payment, and your driving record.)

To get the best value, you must take responsibility for the way you drive. Tickets, suspensions, at fault accidents, DUI's, etc, are risks to the insurance companies and higher rates to the consumers who committed these acts or violations. Insurance companies do not like to assume risks as much as consumers do not like to pay higher rates. While each insurance company has their own rating system, based on the characteristics and risks. You, as the consumer, have control over some of the characteristics, such as the way you drive, the way you pay your bills, the type of vehicle you drive, your credit history, etc. So keep these in mind when you are shopping for insurance:

  1. Driving Record: Accidents or violations; drivers with previous violations or at-fault accidents will be considered to be higher risk, therefore, higher rates. Tickets and accidents take 3 years, while DUI's, suspensions take 5 years to come off your record.
  2. Territory: more claims are made from urban areas than rural areas. With busy traffic, and the possibility of theft and vandalism, insurance companies can tell about your risk of financial loss based on your territory.
  3. Gender and Age: young male drivers are rated higher then young female drivers, because males tend to have more accidents than females. Higher claims for certain age group.
  4. Marital Status: statistics show lower claims filed for married couples than singles..
  5. Prior Insurance Coverage: laps of insurance or cancellations for non-payment will have higher rates.
  6. Vehicle Usage: Higher annual mileage will result in higher premiums because of the higher exposure to risks, subject to the age of the vehicle, of course.
  7. Vehicle Make and Model: vehicles with less safety features and a more powerful engine present higher risks.
  8. Your Credit: your credit history is used to predict the likelihood of insurance future losses.
  9. Your driver license # and SS#: your motor vehicle records will determine which rate you will pay.

Insurance agents cannot control the way you drive or the prices that are being charged, but the service they will provide and the advice they will give you, to help you get better rates are the keys to keeping more money in your pocket.
