What You Should Know Before Buying a Used Car

Is it time to replace your vehicle? Are you buying a vehicle for the very first time? Before you start visiting the car lots and taking test drives, take a moment to educate yourself and make some pre-shopping decisions about what you want in a car. A vehicle is a major purchase, even if you are saving money by buying used rather than new, and in an ideal world, your next vehicle purchase will be a fairly long-term relationship. Avoid impulse buys and the distractions of all the sparkly cars in the auto lot by doing your research first.
  • Decide what type of vehicle you are looking for. Read professional reviews based on gas mileage, safety, performance issues, vehicle size and accommodations before narrowing your options.
  • Take a look at what the consumers are saying, as well. Use your favorite search engine to look for blogs and amateur forums where regular, everyday drivers are talking about their experiences with the type of car you are considering for purchase.
  • Compare prices based on make, model, year, and mileage. By knowing the market for the type of vehicle you are looking for, you will be in a better position to negotiate a fair price.
  • Determine how much you can spend before you shop for a vehicle. Consider getting a pre-approved loan so that you can shop and compare interest rates.
  • Review the history of any used car you are considering for purchase at CarFax or AutoCheck Vehicle History Reports.
  • Inspect the car title before completing any paperwork. Confirm that the there are no existing leans against the vehicle and verify that the seller is the actual owner, especially if you are buying a used car from an individual.
  • Find out if the car is still under warranty. If a manufacturer's warranty is still in effect, make sure it can be transferred to your name before purchasing the vehicle.
  • Have the used vehicle inspected by a qualified auto mechanic before you buy.
  • Get insurance quotes for your potential purchase before buying the vehicle. The cost of insurance can vary widely depending on the type of car and the amount you will owe on it. Knowing the amount of this additional expense may impact your final decision for a used vehicle purchase.
  • For questions about vehicle titles and registrations, check your state's department of motor vehicles or department of revenue. (FAQ - Kansas Vehicle Titles and Registrations)
